about

Dear friends,

There's so much to say and frankly both our plates aren't full because full wouldn't describe the many things falling off of them constantly and those other things being piled on the heap. Can ya relate?

The world spins at 1000 mph, roughly, we're told. Somehow we aren't flung off of it, and even more miraculously we have occasional moments of clarity, such as writing songs, singing in harmony, looking into another person's eyes, or really hearing what they're saying.

We recorded this album in the summer of 2022. Many of the songs we'd been singing for a while, while others we were just working out.

As with anything, there's magic and also moments you say well mighta done it a little different. All in all we picked takes we felt like had the magic in them. For example:

My dear friend John Wood set up a single mic, figure 8 pattern, so Katie and I could sit on either side. We came over the night before recording, after a long day, and did the Fats Domino tune Silver and Gold for a sound check. Too loud. John turned it down and I asked Katie what we should do. She said, Just Close Your Eyes. We did a full take, then went home to get some sleep. When we listened later we said, well, couldn't do better than that. So soundcheck made the album, that's the take you hear on the record.

There were a few single takes. Then there were some we did many times. We both love Yoko Ono, and we've done Remember Love for years now. But we wanted to record Let Me Count The Ways, which was relatively new. We did a bunch of okay takes, but we kept flubbing a lyric and then we started to lose the feeling. It happens. We left it, and came back the next day, but we couldn't get it right. We took a break and opened the door and noticed the notes of the wind chime fit the chords of the song in a beautiful way. So we did a take with the door open, and it was like a spirit came into the chimes at all the perfect moments. So the wind is in the song. Being a song that (to my ears) joyfully celebrates remaining close to someone who is no longer physically there, it was as if that remembered spirit was joining us.

We're sharing Argon with everyone who ever lived. It will pass through our lungs and into new people not born yet. The wind will carry it.

Anyway, as anyone know, I can get on a good ramble. There's a lot to say about any of these songs, but of course each speaks for itself. It's probably best that way. I guess talking too much about a song is like putting words in the mouth of a child. I could go on. Katie is sensibly sewing, everyone else has left this artist's Sanctuary, the community center we're so lucky to be a part of that keeps going and going despite the obstacles. In that way, if it were personified, it could relate with these album notes. Hangin' on. Well I better not, and mercifully I know where I'll fall. To sleep.

We hope this album is received as act of love, an embrace, a reaching out across distance that is both real and illusion.

With so much love,
James Z (and wisely refraining from adding anything else, the incomparable Katie B)

and here's the original "about this album" for those who know us.

Hi yous people!

The debut album you've just found is here and now. We worked every day and most importantly love writing every other word like this blurb.

Thanks to you abundantly. Sending flowers and chocolate through space in your direction.

Love,
